Skateboarding is more than just a sport; it’s a vibrant culture that epitomises urban lifestyle. Recognising this, the Urban Arts Festival aimed to celebrate skateboarding through its dedicated skateboarding zone. This initiative was not only about showcasing skateboarding but also about embedding it into the community fabric.
In preparation for the festival, we engaged in detailed planning sessions with both the college and local council. These discussions were pivotal in designing an area that would be safe, exciting, and reflective of the skateboarding culture. We also collaborated closely with the local skateboarding community to construct new ramps, ensuring that they were both challenging for the participants and entertaining for the spectators.
A key figure in this project was Luke Ward, a specialist SEN teacher and avid skateboarder. Registered with Skateboard GB, Luke’s expertise was invaluable in blending educational strategies with skateboarding, creating a supportive and engaging environment for all attendees, particularly those with special educational needs.
Our efforts culminated in a skateboarding zone that was not just a venue for sports but a platform for community interaction and support, ensuring that everyone had a memorable experience at the festival.
